It’s that time of year again…attempting to pair nonreaders with a text they will love (or at least like!). There is so much in the world to entice teenagers that reading isn’t high on the priority list. I think all students can become readers if paired with the right text.
I’m always looking for ways to meet my reluctant readers where they—everything from promoting myself as a reader, rewards for reading, and pushing books like it’s my job ;).
This year, I decided to designate a spot in my classroom for students to grab a matchmaking handout. I don’t know my students well enough yet to find the perfect book without pulling some prior knowledge. I always have a quiet student who is resistant to tell me much, so I’m hoping having this as an option will create some of that dialogue.
I also find that even my busiest readers like it when I can pair them with a book. There’s power in being able to choose on their own, but let’s face it, matching students to books is kind of a dream job.

“One of the best cures for a reluctant reader, after all, is a tale they cannot stop themselves from reading.” ― Neil Gaiman.
