We have a TREAT for you! This FREE printable booklet is perfect for hosting a "Book Tasting" during the spooky season! If you're looking for a creative way to help your students preview and sample a variety of books so they can choose the independent novel that's best for them, this is a fun and productive activity!
If you've never held a "Book Tasting" in your classroom, it can be super simple. For a basic "Book Tasting," arrange desks or tables into stations, and gather a selection of books at each station. We recommend grouping the books by genre. Give each student a handout, and a certain amount of time to preview a book that interests them. They'll use the handout to record their impressions of each book. (This will give you great feedback on your students' reading interests!) After time is up, students rotate to a new book or a new station!
If you want to make your Trick-or-Treat Book Tasting EXTRA memorable, we have some fun suggestions:
At each station, place some genre-themed costumes. For instance: Fantasy- fairy wings, wands, witch's hat/ Sports Lit- headband, water bottle, goggles, baseball glove/ Mystery- magnifying glass, spy hat, mustaches, etc. Students can choose a station based on the costume "vibe" that appeals to them. (And don't be surprised if students wear the costumes while reading!) : )
Set out small bowls of candy at each station.
Yell "DING DONG!" whenever it's time to switch to a new station.
