Back to School- The First Six Days (Day 4)

Updated: Aug 6

Day 4: About Me Slides and Student Survey

This day is all about students sharing who they are and what is important to them. Now that I've set an example by sharing about myself, and we've spent some time as a class getting to know each other better, my students are more prepared to share a little bit about themselves. I think it's still important to leave it up to students to decide which information they are comfortable sharing, and these two activities allow for plenty of student choice to adapt to their differing comfort levels.

  • About Me Slides- I create a blank slideshow, give the whole class editing access, and ask each student to add their own slide to it. Later, I will ask students to read over their classmates' slides and add positive comments to three slides. Students can customize the design of the slide however they like, and are free to add photos, but I ask that they share some basic information about themselves. This might include:

    • Preferred name/pronouns

    • Hobbies

    • Job

    • Future goals

    • Favorite books, movies, music, games, etc.

    • Their answer to a "would-you-rather" question posed to the class

  • Student Survey

    • This is a more private way to gain more insight into student preferences and goals. I have students take about ten minutes to complete this on their computers. Click here for a FREE Copy of my Student Survey!

    • Receiving this information from your students at the start of the year will make it much easier for you to build connections with your students and to troubleshoot issues later on!

Ready to move onto more content-related activities?

Keep an eye out for our next post on Day 5: Reading, Annotating, and Discussing a Poem!
